Yewon Kim is a violinist of exceptional sensitivity and depth, recognised as one of the most compelling performers of her generation. She entered and graduated as top of class from Yonsei University College of Music, before continuing her studies in Germany — completing a Soloist Master's (Instrumental Solist Master) at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Meisterklassen Examen at the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts, where she graduated with the jury's unanimous highest distinction, Ausgezeichnet.
Her career has been marked by success at major international competitions, including the Han-Mi National Competition, Gyeongwon Music Competition, Music Spring Competition, Korean Music Association Overseas Dispatch Competition, KBS New Artist Competition, Berlin Contemporary Music Award, and the Vienna Grand Prize, among others. As a concerto soloist she has appeared with the Seoul Youth Orchestra, Gyeonggi Philharmonic, Prime Philharmonic, Cheonan Symphony Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra, and the Staatskapelle Baddriburg — earning consistent praise from audiences and critics alike.
An active chamber musician, she has participated in the Seoul Spring Festival (SSF), the Yun Isang Tongyeong International Music Festival (TIMF), and the Courchevel Music Alp Festival in France. She has also served as an academy and guest member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the MDR Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin — developing her orchestral artistry under conductors of the highest calibre, including Ricardo Chailly, Herbert Blomstedt, Andris Nelsons, and Paavo Järvi.
After distinguished service as a permanent member of the Staatskapelle Dresden and as a member of the string quartet of the Berliner Ensemble theatre, she was appointed Principal Second Violin of the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra. Following her return to Korea, she received the 28th Music Journal New Artist Award and served as guest principal with the One Korea Orchestra, the Asian Philharmonic Orchestra (APO), the Yonsei Sinfonietta, and as concertmaster of the Bach Orchestra, Cowon Philharmonic, and Ditto Orchestra. She also served as guest professor at Yonsei University.
She is currently a faculty member at Chung-Ang University, nurturing the next generation of musicians while continuing an active and wide-ranging performance career.
